1 PUT SB IN GRAVE to put someone who has died in a grave: bury sb in/at etc: Gretta wanted to be buried at St Peter's.
2 have buried sb to have had someone you love die: Jessie has already buried two husbands.
3 PUT STH UNDER EARTH to put something under the earth, often in order to hide it
4 COVER WITH STH (usually passive) to cover something with other things so that it can not be found: bury sth under/beneath etc: The climbers were buried under a pile of rocks.
5 FEELING/MEMORY to ignore a feeling or memory and pretend that it does not exist: a deeply buried memory
6 bury your face/head etc (in sth) to press your face etc into something soft, usually to get comfort, to avoid someone, or to be able to smell something: Noel turned away, burying his face in the pillow. | bury your face/head in your hands (=cover your face etc with your hands because you are very upset)
7 dead and buried completely finished and no longer important: All the prewar ideas about defence are now dead and buried.
8 bury the hatchet/bury your differences to agree to stop arguing about something and become friends again
9 PUSH STH INTO A SURFACE to push something, especially something sharp, into something else with a lot of force: The dog buried its teeth in my leg. | bury itself (=be pushed, thrown, or shot somewhere and stick there): The knife buried itself in the wall a few inches from my head.
10 bury yourself in your work/studies etc to give all your attention to something: After the divorce, she buried herself in her work.
11 bury your head in the sand to ignore an unpleasant situation and hope it will stop if you do not think about it
